Ruben Um Nyobè
According to UNESCO, Ruben Um Nyobè was secretary-general of the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon (UPC) from 1948. Banned by France in July 1955 after riots in Douala, the UPC went underground. From December 1956, it waged an armed struggle, first in the Bassa region. Ruben Um Nyobè was killed by the French army on 13 September 1958, near his native village of Boumnyebel, in the Bassa region. His death marked a turning point: the armed struggle declined rapidly in Bassa country but continued in the Bamileke region.
