Njoya
According to UNESCO, Njoya was the seventeenth ruler of the Bamum kingdom, which he led from 1886 to 1933. Around 1896 he had an original writing system created, Shumom, to transcribe his language and administer his kingdom. Under German and then French administration he retained for a time considerable internal autonomy at Foumban, where he had a royal palace built.
