Ernest Ouandié

According to UNESCO, the Union of the Peoples of Cameroon (UPC) was banned by France in July 1955. From December 1956, it waged an armed struggle, first in the Bassa region and then, more severely, in the Bamileke region. This insurrection and its repression continued well after the 1960 independence. Ernest Ouandié was its last leader, until his capture and execution on 15 January 1971. According to a British diplomatic report of the time, since cited by historians, between 61,300 and 76,300 civilians are estimated to have died between December 1956 and June 1964. Nearly 80 percent of them died in the Bamileke region.
